A TEA-ny bit OF HISTORY:
This pink “hen on nest” was hand crafted by The Longaberger Company, an American manufacturer of handcrafted maple wood baskets and other home products. It was started by Dave Longaberger in 1973 and was family owned and operated. The company ceased operations on May 4, 2018.
In the 1930’s, Westmoreland Glass was the first to use the term “hen on a nest” and this was later shortened to “hen on nest.” These dishes are also referred to as “chicken in the basket,” “animal dish” and “trinket box.” There are different designs, types and colours, made by many glass companies in the USA since 1870’s or earlier. Despite this, some colours are harder to find than others. White milkglass and clear are most abundant, followed by amber, green, blue, carnival glass in blue, marigold and green. Pink and ruby red are some of the colours that are harder to find.
